Sharing artworks, texts and performances by 5 HKU Master Fine Art alumni, in collaboration with Utrecht University Law Faculty

ART. 1 explores how Article 1 of the Dutch constitution translates and unfolds in both personal and political urgencies when considering equality and discrimination. Together, the participating artists try to navigate their positions through provocations, questions and soothings, using methods of artistic research. They explore personal narratives, fluidities and living in The Netherlands, negotiating Dutch and their own native languages while confronting Article 1.

Jinxiao Zhou’s installation unfolds the Chinese words Law(法)and dissolves(溶)giving a glimpse of how this group works together through the practice of both reading and writing letters.
All Under One Sky, a performative exercise by Ganesh Nepal and Manuela Viezzer explores how a cosmopolitan community can be imagined through active listening and critical self-reflection.
Manju Sharma’s hanging installation and sound piece concern the entanglements beyond the nation-state and how we rely on the discrimination and inequality of the many to sustain the equality of the few.
Kaylie Kist’s work plays with the inaccessibility of the 1815 Dutch Constitution stored in the National Archive, replicating both its title and book cover in the form of a sleeping bag. The accompanying sound piece is composed of vocal fragments of those participating in ART. 1.
