De keuzes van ontwerpers en hun opdrachtgevers bepalen welke stemmen een podium krijgen en welke verhalen we horen. Wat zichtbaar is, krijgt vorm door de systemen waarbinnen we werken. Diezelfde systemen bepalen ook wat buiten beeld blijft en wie niet wordt gehoord. Absent by Design laat zien dat verdwijnen geen toeval is.

In deze tentoonstelling presenteren tweedejaarsstudenten van HKU Graphic Design negen samenwerkingsprojecten. Daarin onderzoeken zij hoe grafisch ontwerp zich verhoudt tot het uitvergroten of juist verhullen van posities en belangen, een mechanisme dat soms opzettelijk, maar vaak ook onbewust plaatsvindt. De onderliggende systemen – economisch, sociaal, cultureel, technologisch of institutioneel – vormen een onderbelicht deel van het grafisch ontwerp. Vanuit verschillende perspectieven maakt Absent by Design voelbaar hoe structurele uitsluiting verankerd is in onze maatschappij, in de canon van het vak en de dagelijkse ontwerppraktijk.

De installaties, prints en video’s in de tentoonstelling belichten uiteenlopende vormen van afwezigheid: van bijvoorbeeld koloniale en feministische narratieven, tot marginalisatie en censuur. Ze gaan de dialoog aan met elkaar én met de bezoeker en nodigen uit om anders te kijken: wat is zichtbaar? Maar vooral ook: wat wordt weggelaten?

In 9 collaborative projects, HKU Graphic Design students explore representation, visibility and exclusion

The choices made by designers and their clients determine which voices are amplified and which stories are heard. What becomes visible is shaped by the systems in which we work. Those same systems also determine what remains unseen and who goes unheard. Absent by Design shows that disappearance is never accidental.

In this exhibition, second-year students from HKU Graphic Design present nine collaborative projects. Through these works, they explore how graphic design relates to the amplification or concealment of positions and interests, a mechanism that is sometimes deliberate, but often unconscious. The underlying systems – economic, social, cultural, technological, or institutional – form an underexamined aspect of graphic design. From a range of perspectives, Absent by Design makes perceptible how structural exclusion is embedded in our society, in the canon of the discipline, and in everyday design practice.

The installations, prints and video’s in the exhibition highlight different forms of absence: from colonial and feminist narratives to marginalization and censorship. They engage in dialogue with one another as well as with the visitor, inviting us to look differently: what is visible? But above all: what is being left out?
