Amuse Bouche presents the work of five artists from the HKU Fine Art guest lecturers’ programme. This work is not afraid to confront the audience, while simultaneously embracing and questioning everyday reality. The exhibitors range from up-and-coming talents —e.g. Narges Mohammadi, who graduated from the KABK this year and recently won the Ron Mandos Young Blood Award— to more renowned makers, such as Prix de Rome winner 2019 Rory Pilgrim.

For curators Caz Egelie and Iriée Zamblé the compilation of Amuse Bouche organically resulted in a proposition for a contemporary artistic practice: an artist who shares ideas, experiences and perspectives through collaborations, and who —without hesitation and rooted in self-awareness— allows the position as artist and as individual in the world to merge.

The work in the exhibition plays with expectations, power structures and predetermined rules. Making use of personal and allegorical narratives, often with a political, subversive and/or humorous undertone, the artists offer alternative perspectives. This results in work that not only captivates the eye, but also has the ambition to tickle the tongue.

Werk van 5 kunstenaars uit het gastdocentenprogramma van HKU Fine Art

In Amuse Bouche presenteren Iriée Zamblé en Caz Egelie het werk van vijf kunstenaars uit het door hen samengestelde gastdocentenprogramma van HKU Fine Art. Werk dat niet bang is voor het publiek, en dat de dagelijkse realiteit tegelijkertijd omarmt en bevraagt. Het vijftal exposanten varieert van aanstormende talenten – Narges Mohammadi studeerde bijvoorbeeld dit jaar af aan de KABK en won recentelijk de Ron Mandos Young Blood Award – tot meer gerenommeerde makers, zoals Prix de Rome-winnaar 2019 Rory Pilgrim.

Tijdens het samenstellen van Amuse Bouche ontstond op een organische wijze een voorstel voor een hedendaags kunstenaarschap: een kunstenaar die ideeën, ervaringen en perspectieven deelt door middel van samenwerkingen, en die de rol als kunstenaar en als individu in de wereld vanuit een groot zelfbewustzijn en zonder aarzeling laat samenvallen.

Het werk in de tentoonstelling speelt met verwachtingen, machtsstructuren en vooropgelegde regels. Gebruikmakend van persoonlijke en allegorische narratieven, vaak met een politieke, subversieve en/of humoristische ondertoon, stellen de kunstenaars alternatieve zienswijzen voor. Het levert werk op dat zeker niet alleen de ogen weet te boeien, maar ook de ambitie heeft om de tong te prikkelen.
