How can a bird be afraid of me? is het afstudeerproject van HKU Musician 3.0 student Nyré Tiessen. Door zorgvuldig momenten te isoleren die anders onopgemerkt zouden blijven, reflecteert zij in deze audiovisuele installatie op de eigen kwetsbaarheid via de kwetsbaarheid van de ander.
How can a bird be afraid of me? is een verslag van de onhandige en kwetsbare zoektocht naar intimiteit onder jonge vrouwen en mensen die bij de geboorte als vrouw zijn geregistreerd. Hierbij worden verschillende manieren om deze intimiteit tot stand te brengen ontleedt. Wat betekent het om dichter bij een ander wezen te komen, en waar ligt de grens tussen het ‘zelf’ en de ‘ander’? De installatie verbindt dergelijke thema’s via ontmoetingen met vreemden in Berlijn en geliefden van thuis, en visualiseert zo de universaliteit van vervreemding en vertrouwdheid. Het snijpunt tussen realisme en absurditeit speelt een centrale rol in het werk – het triviale ontledend en het in een nieuw licht plaatsen met behulp van harde cuts en close-up beelden. How can a bird be afraid of me? maakt daarbij gebruik van parameters ontleend aan muzikale compositie, zoals ritme, tempo en harmonie. De beelden fungeren als verschillende muzikale delen in een polyfone melodie, met daar doorheen een zacht neuriën om de compositorische aard van het werk te benadrukken.
Omdat AG zich nog altijd in lockdown bevindt, is bij deze tentoonstelling helaas slechts zeer beperkt bezoek mogelijk via persoonlijke afspraak.

How can a bird be afraid of me? is the graduation project of HKU Musician 3.0 student Nyré Tiessen. By carefully isolating moments that might otherwise go unnoticed, in this audiovisual installation she reflects on one’s own vulnerability through the vulnerability of the other.
How can a bird be afraid of me? is an account of the clumsy and vulnerable quest for intimacy among young women and people assigned female at birth, dissecting various ways of establishing this intimacy with oneself and others. What does it mean to come closer to another being, and where is the boundary between the “self” and the “other”? The installation connects these themes through encounters with strangers in Berlin and loved ones from home, visualising the universality of alienation and familiarity. The intersection between realism and absurdity is central to the work – dissecting the trivial and putting it in a new light using hard cuts and close-up images. How can a bird be afraid of me? is established using parameters derived from musical composition, such as rhythm, tempo and harmony. The images act as if they were different musical parts in a polyphonic melody, with a soft humming tune weaving through to emphasize the compositional nature of the work.
