De tentoonstelling Hydromedia: Seeing with Water  toont nieuw werk van vier kunstenaars dat is ontstaan in het kader van een internationaal onderzoeksproject, waar HKU aan deelneemt. Mariko Hori (JP/NL), Alexandra Crouwers (NL/BE), Meng-Chan Yu (TW/DE) en Sanne Vaassen (NL) hebben in oktober 2023, in samenwerking met curatoren Taco Hidde Bakker en Sjoerd Knibbeler (beiden werkzaam als docent bij HKU Media), onderzoek gedaan in de stad en provincie Utrecht. Er hebben onder meer uitwisselingen plaatsgevonden met ecologen, ingenieurs en wetenschappers die zich op heel verschillende vlakken met watervraagstukken bezighouden. 

Met water als inspiratie en als medium ontwikkelt Hydromedia nieuwe artistieke verbeeldingen waarmee onze relatie tot de elementen en de biosfeer van binnenuit beleefd kan worden. Dankzij het delen van onderzoeksprocessen en methoden via laagdrempelige publicaties, tentoonstellingen en workshops, kan het publiek ervaren hoe de verbeelding van de kunstenaar bij kan dragen aan de ingrijpende ecologische vraagstukken van onze tijd.

Een eerdere editie van Hydromedia vond plaats in Antwerpen (KASK), na Utrecht neemt Karlsruhe (HfG) het stokje over. Eind 2024 worden de werken van alle twaalf kunstenaars getoond in het Museum voor Wetenschap en Technologie in Dresden (DE). 

Op zaterdag 17 februari geeft elk van de vier kunstenaars een gratis workshop.

An exhibition by 4 artists showing the results of a residency program at HKU

The exhibition Hydromedia: Seeing with Water features new work by four artists, created as part of an international research project in which HKU participates. Mariko Hori (JP/NL), Alexandra Crouwers (NL/BE), Meng-Chan Yu (TW/DE) and Sanne Vaassen (NL) conducted research in the city and province of Utrecht in October 2023, in coöperation with curators Taco Hidde Bakker and Sjoerd Knibbeler (both working as lecturers at HKU Media), which included exchanges with ecologists, engineers and scientists who deal with water issues in very different fields.    

Using water as a source of inspiration and as a medium, Hydromedia develops new artistic representations through which our relationship to the elements and the biosphere can be experienced from within. Sharing research processes and methods through accessible publications, exhibitions and workshops, allows the public to understand how the artist’s imagination can contribute to the profound ecological issues of our time.

A previous edition of Hydromedia took place in Antwerp (KASK), and after the Utrecht edition, Karlsruhe (HfG) will take over for the third chapter. A final exhibition by the end of 2024 at the Museum of Science and Technology in Dresden (DE) will collect the works of all twelve artists. 

On Saturday, Feb. 17, each of the four artists gives a free workshop.
