SSSSSSSST is een tentoonstelling waarin de oren geprikkeld worden. Wat is er te horen wanneer we zelf stil zijn? Wat kunnen we leren wanneer we beter luisteren naar onze omgeving?

Met het oprichten van het Instituut voor Huisgeluid studeerde Elise ’t Hart (1991, Den Haag) in 2013 af aan HKU Fine Art. Sindsdien is ze werkzaam als kunstenaar en docent, en maakte zij talrijke tentoonstellingen, recentelijk onder andere voor de H3H Biënnale in Oosterhout, in museum CODA in Apeldoorn en eerder ook als curator voor het voormalige DordtYart.

 ‘t Hart gebruikt geluid om haar verhalen te vertellen en vertelt verhalen over geluiden. Ze is gefascineerd door de ervaring van de wereld om ons heen: “Wij westerlingen zijn zo gefocust op beeld – ‘eerst zien, dan geloven’ – dat we geneigd zijn te vergeten hoe geluid ons dichterbij ons gevoel brengt. Geluid is immers trilling, soms letterlijk voelbaar.” ‘t Hart wil ons middels installaties, podcasts, workshops, composities en presentaties bewust maken van de waarde en betekenis van het alledaagse geluid, met een meer volledige ervaring van onze omgeving als resultaat. Welke rol speelt geluid in ons voorstellingsvermogen, in onze herinnering? Wat kunnen we leren voor de toekomst door te luisteren naar het verleden?

In SSSSSSSST brengt ’t Hart werk van haarzelf en dat van tien voor haar inspirerende kunstenaars en componisten samen, waaronder dat van HKU-alumni Mark IJzerman en Valentijn Janssen. De tentoonstelling is tot stand gekomen in samenwerking met muzikant, componist en sound designer Nils Davidse, alumnus van HKU Utrechts Conservatorium.

A group exhibition about listening, curated by Elise ’t Hart

SSSSSSSST is an exhibition that stimulates the ears. What can be heard when we ourselves are silent? What do we learn when we listen better to our surroundings?

Elise ’t Hart (1991, The Hague) founded the Instituut voor Huisgeluid (Institute for Domestic Sound),  for her graduation from HKU Fine Art in 2013. Since then, she has worked as an artist and teacher, making numerous exhibitions, most recently for the H3H Biennial in Oosterhout, at museum CODA in Apeldoorn and previously as curator for the former DordtYart.

’t Hart uses sound to tell her stories and tells stories about sounds. She is fascinated by the experience of the world around us: “We Westerners are so focused on images – ‘see first, then believe’ – that we tend to forget how sound brings us closer to our feelings. After all, sound is vibration, sometimes literally tangible.” Through installations, podcasts, workshops, compositions and presentations, ’t Hart aims to create awareness of the value and meaning of everyday sound, resulting in a more complete experience of our environment. What role does sound play in our imagination, in our memory? What can we learn about the future by listening to the past?

In SSSSSSSST, ’t Hart brings together work by herself and that of ten artists and composers who inspire her, including that of HKU alumni Mark IJzerman and Valentijn Janssen. The exhibition was created in collaboration with musician, composer and sound designer Nils Davidse, alumnus of HKU Utrechts Conservatorium.
