Our planet’s metabolism is distorted by the exuberant release of carbon dioxide and heat. At the same time our social, political and cultural landscapes are drastically influenced by a pandemic. Change comes in ripples or waves, and at times with torrential force.

The works in Turning Torrents draw connections from the ecological, climatological and biological realm towards culture, politics and economy, and back. We believe in an urgent need to increase our understanding of the direct and indirect interactions that shape ecosystems dramatically. But is the ambition to leave ‘zero footprint’ really the solution? Do we actually want to exist leaving no trace? Is this even possible?

Starting with a seminar and workshops in June, ten students from HKU Fine Art (BA and MA) and HKU Photography worked together with curators and artists from IMPAKT and HKU Games and Interaction. Together, they respond to the program of this year’s IMPAKT Festival: Zero Footprint – Living and Connecting on a Damaged Earth.

Studenten van HKU Fine Art en HKU Photography reageren op het thema van het Impakt Festival van dit jaar: Zero Footprint

Het metabolisme van onze planeet wordt aangetast door de uitbundige uitstoot van kooldioxide en warmte. Tegelijkertijd wordt ons sociale, politieke en culturele landschap ingrijpend beïnvloed door een pandemie. Veranderingen komen in rimpelingen of golven, en soms in een stortvloed.

Het werk in de tentoonstelling Turning Torrents legt verbanden vanuit het ecologische, klimatologische en biologische domein naar cultuur, politiek en economie, en weer terug. We geloven in de noodzaak om de directe en indirecte interacties die ecosystemen op dramatische wijze vormgeven beter te begrijpen. Maar is de ambitie van ‘zero footprint’ wel de oplossing? Willen we echt geen sporen van ons bestaan achterlaten? En is dit wel mogelijk?

Startend met een seminar en workshops in juni, werkten tien studenten van HKU Fine Art (BA en MA) en HKU Photography samen met curatoren en kunstenaars van IMPAKT en HKU Games and Interaction. Samen reageren ze op het programma van het IMPAKT Festival van dit jaar: Zero Footprint – Living and Connecting on a Damaged Earth.
